This is very cool, folks.

There’s a website called FreeRice, and in exchange for improving your vocabulary, you can donate free rice through the UN to fight world hunger. There’s no registration or password needed. For every word you define correctly, 20 grains of rice are donated – I just spent 15 minutes or so and I’ve donated 1420 grains of rice.

Very cool.

Rather addicting….

I Can’t Think of a Clever Title

Critiques, Random, The Day Job No Comments »

Maybe it’s because all my brainpower has been directed towards making progress through the drift of things that need to get done before I leave for the weekend.  Maybe all the other clever and semi-clever subject lines have all been flukes.  The world may never know.

So far this week, I’ve edited three theology papers of various lengths, returned comments on the first 35 pages or so of a good friend’s manuscript, gone to the library, purchased 6 books (but I only get to keep one – the rest are gifts. sigh.), done laundry, and am thisclose to finishing the giant purple porcupine story. It’s losing momentum towards the end, and I’m still working out how to avoid that, though without much success. Fortunately, it’s being written for the express purpose of being critiqued, so maybe I’ll just wait and see if anyone else has any brilliant ideas for the ending.

I still need to make edits on the porcupine story, write two super-shorts for a writing club I’m in (darn end of month deadlines!), mail off an important check, clean the house (including vaccuuming the carpet and swiffering the kitchen), send off my choices for residency modules this January, do another load of laundry, pack for California and spend some time with Matt and Shiloh before I leave them for four days.

First, though, I’ve got envelopes to stuff here at work. The fun never stops. At least it’s only about 200 today. Maybe less.

Also, in Really Good News, I’ve finally harassed enough people at the office that we’re on the very cusp of having the licensing to play any music we want to in the lobby. Word on the street was that it might have been going to happen yesterday, but apparently it didn’t. I’m thinking about calling Greg every hour to check on it today, but that might be excessive. On the other hand, I’m really sick of these three cd’s.

I Must Have a Knack…

Distractions, Updates No Comments »

How is it that I manage to superload one week out of almost every month with everything I need to do?  Furthermore, how do I fail to recognize those weeks before I’m already inside one?

I must have a gift. Or, well… something. Maybe it’s payback for not doing much of anything last week.

I’ve just realized exactly how much I need to get done this week, not the least of which is this short story for SHU residency critiques, due on Friday and which I would like to get a chance to edit before I send it off. It’s a fun story, and I really like it – but every time I sit down to work on it, something else demands attention. Things like laundry can and often do get pushed off for a day or so before we run out of socks and underwear, but when the dog whines she needs to go out NOW, and then it’s all downhill.

I had hoped to do a bit of Christmas decorating this week but aside from the wreath on the front door I have a feeling that will be postponed until after my trip to lovely California this weekend. That’s right, I’m headed west because I just can’t get enough travel! No, seriously, one of my best friends is flying me out for a much anticipated visit We’re notoriously delinquent about sending gifts to one another, so this is something like three or four years’ worth of backlogged birthday and Christmas gifts all at once. Besides, we always see each other in odd-numbered years, and 2007 is drawing to a close, folks. I need my Jamie visit.

Also, I’m led to believe that I am her “show and tell” item for her middle school students on Monday. I’m a little nervous, because she’s been telling them about me and now I have a feeling I’ll have to be witty and smart and fun. That’s a tall order. I’ll let you know how it goes.

Now, back to the writing.

Shiloh Tail-Chaser

Shiloh, Writing Day 1 Comment »

I promise I’m writing today.  No really, I am.  I’m writing about Lydia and Damien trying to move (but not kill) an 80-pound purple porcupine that shoots poisoned quills at anything it thinks is a threat.  It’s great.   Also, I have this really adorable footage of Shiloh chasing her tail, which she tends to do for about a half hour at a time, between naps. Sometimes we just sit and watch her and laugh.

Delinquent Again

Random, Shiloh 1 Comment »

Yep, I’m a horrible blogging person.  I admit it.  Knowing is half the battle, right?

Things have been busy. The puppy is still amazingly cute. She likes to sleep on our shoes whenever possible. She doesn’t chew them… just naps on them. If anyone expresses interest, I’ll post pictures.

Happy Thanksgiving!! a few hours early. We’re going to eat the feast over at our friends’ house tomorrow afternoon, and are contributing three essential elements of the meal from our perspective: the green bean casserole, the orange jello (with pineapple and cheese in it, yum), and the cranberry ice.

Speaking of the cranberry ice, it’s time for me to go pour it into the cube trays and get it freezing.

Ta ta!

Thanks to Our Vets

I’d like to extend my thanks to all those who serve and have served in the armed forces.  I may not agree with the government on all points, but the individuals who serve our country deserve a great deal more than simple respect.  My servicemen, past and present:

  • Bernard H. Wright, Sr. – US Navy
  • Lyman C. Peck – US Air Force
  • Chester Whitt – US Army
  • Mark Petitte – US Navy
  • John Snider – US Air Force
  • Bob Duncan – US Marines
  • Daniel Sherman – US Air Force
  • Jonathan Sherman – US Air Force
  • Michael Ward – US Army
  • David Lee – US Marines
  • David Whitt – US Army
  • Steven Whitt – US Air Force (currently serving in Iraq)

So, for those I know personally and those I don’t:  Thank you.  We owe you more than we know.  You have my appreciation.

Two Things

First of all, when you’re wondering where your measuring spoons have gone, and you haven’t seen them for a few days, always check the garbage disposal before you run it.  If you don’t, this is what will happen:
spoons

Second, when you get a puppy, please be sure it’s at least as cute as ours:

Her name is Shiloh, and she’s coming home with us tomorrow.  Yay puppy!

The Good, The Bad, and The… well, I guess there’s only good and bad.

NaNoWriMo, Updates 2 Comments »

The Bad:  I’ve written 151 words this week.  This is not the best start to NaNoWriMo.

The Better: I’m going to a write-in tonight, where I will (hopefully) happily spin out thousands of carefree words.

The Best: The only real condolence for this sad state of writing affairs is that the house and office actually look like sane people live here, rather than a pair of somewhat demented 5-year-olds.  Also, there is Real Food in the fridge for the first time in at least a month.  Woohoo!  With any luck, this return to normalcy in living arrangements will trigger a return of writing inspiration.

What?  Why are you laughing?
